STMB Episode 12 – Jigger #2: Bruddah Waltah (finally, eh Doc Frisbie?)

Many months ago… ok over a year ago, I promised Doc Frisbie that I’d tell the story of the day I moved my new to me Gulfstar 44 ketch from downtown Waikiki, at the Ala Wai Marina, to the mooring field at Keehi Lagoon. What ensued was comical (to me anyway) and led to a great friendship with some awesome guys. That was back in 2005. The story still brings my heart joy all these 20 years later. I think often of Brother Walter and the rest of the guys at the Keehi Fishing Club. I hope they’re still downing green bottles and snacking on seared ahi.

Episode 07 – Jim Garrett, Part 1

This week Scott is joined by lifelong sailor Jim Garrett. Jim started sailing as a young man on dinghies around the York River and Chesapeake Bay. Over the years he graduated from small boats to keel boats, with many adventures along the way. Along the way Jim met some famous local sailors and some world-renowned sailors as well. This is Part 1 of a two-part interview. Check out Jim’s website at www.gmsurveys.net.

Aaannnddd… The moment you’ve all been waiting for! Episode 06 is up!

Whelp, that was too long of a break. Sorry about that. In Episode 06 we have a short clip with Scott and Fern on Wagtail headed to Holiday Marina on the Severn River for the off season followed by Scott’s thoughts on helping Joe move his boat from the dock in Gloucester on Wilsons Creek to Wormley Creek Marina off the York River. This is a bit of a teaser episode as it just introduces some stories that we will hopefully dive deeper in to during an upcoming episode. I hope to sit down with Joe and have a proper interview (well as proper as anything gets around here) about the adventure. The first day, with Fern, was cold and windy. She was a trooper. She’d just come off a 12-hour overnight shift in the ER at the hospital and then bundled up and helped me move the boat. Although I feel bad that she sometimes doesn’t get the rest she deserves, I sure appreciate that she wants to be out there with me, even if it is to keep an eye on me… But seriously, it’s great to have her along and to have her help, wouldn’t be near as fun without her aboard.

STMB Podcast Episode 06 COMING SOON!

Please forgive the lengthy break, faithful listeners. Ok, not sure if more than one of you missed the show, but I did get one inquiry about when the next episode would be out. Thanks, Matt N.! Well, for those of you that were patiently waiting, the wait is almost over. Currently I’m on an airplane 35,000 feet over somewhere, on my way to New Orleans. I have some audio clips from the past couple of months to work on when I get to the hotel this evening. It’s my goal to have something up for Episode 06 over the next couple of days. I appreciate your patience!

Episode 06 will consist of some semblance of audio from a couple of trips to take various boats to the yard for their winter, off-season lay-up/maintenance. In one, my wife and I brought Wagtail, the WRYC’s Paceship 26 around from the club mooring to Holiday Marina down in Guinea, off the Severn River. It was a tad breezy that day and the audio is a little rough. I’ll keep plugging away at editing it, but if it’s unusable, it will go by the way side. The other half (or more than half) of the episode will be some thoughts from me in the car too and from a trip with Joe Morgan to bring his boat from its berth in Gloucester on Wilson’s Creek down to Wormley Creek on the York River. That turned out to be a bit of an adventure. We’ll see if Joe is game for recording an episode about the details of the adventure down the road.

As for upcoming episodes after Episode 06, there are three interviews in the queue that just need to be scheduled and executed. I’ll try to make it sooner than three months from now… Whelp, time to fasten seatbelts. Talk to y’all soon.

Cheers, Scott

STMB Podcast Episode 05 – 300ft From the Mooring

In Episode 05 of the Splice the Main Brace Podcast, Scott is joined onboard S/V Tranquility Base (affectionately called TB) by his stepdaughter, Natalia. As the episode begins, Scott and Natalia have recently anchored a mere 300 ft from the mooring ball at the Ware River Yacht Club (WRYC), TB’s home port, due to some mechanical problems. After wondering about the zany powerboater that keeps zipping by, Scott and Natalia realize that not only do they know the zany powerboater, but he’s a member of the club; and he comes to the rescue. Following the anchoring exercise and failed late fall sailing trip, Scott and Natalia sit down for a brief introduction and background.

Episode 03 – An interview with Harvey Morgan

Very excited to share today’s episode with you all. Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with Harvey Morgan and spend almost two hours talking about his seven decades of sailing. As a charter member of the Ware River Yacht Club (www.wryc.org), Harvey grew up sailing his brother’s homemade dingy in the waters of the Mobjack Bay and its tributaries. He related many of those stories as he learned about the boat, how to sail it, and how to have some grand adventures in the late 1940’s and early 1950’s. Later, Harvey bought his dream sailboat and spent many years sailing around the Chesapeake Bay, up and down the east coast of the United States and around the Caribbean. I hope you enjoy the talk as much as I enjoyed the time spent listening to his stories. You can find the latest episode here.

Eight Bells – Jimmy Buffett

The passing of time onboard ship is marked by ringing of the ship’s bell. The bell is struck one time for each 30 minutes. Thus, the end of a standard four-hour watch is signified by the ringing of the ship’s bell eight times. Traditionally, the term eight bells has also come to represent the passing of one associated with the sea. Eight bells have been struck for Jimmy Buffett. We have the watch, JB. Sail on sailor.

Episode 02 of the STMB Podcast is a tribute to the life and art of Jimmy Buffett. Follow the link here to listen in. The episode includes a couple of Jimmy Buffett songs and a reading from his book A Salty Piece of Land as well as Herman Wouk’s Don’t Stop the Carnival. I had originally intended to simply read a couple chapters from Jimmy’s book as well as an excerpt from Wouk’s work. However, when I started reading, I was immediately moved by the author’s note Jimmy wrote for A Salty Piece of Land way back in 2001. It was VERY fitting for this episode.

I hope you enjoy the episode. Please drop me a line at scott@stmbpodcast.com and let me know what you think. I promise to keep working on the audio quality. Thanks for listening in the meantime.
